How is medical cannabis consumed?

Plant-based medicine has attracted significant attention in recent years. If you're prescribed it in Australia, it will come in a regulated form from a licensed pharmacy. Smoking isn't recommended. Here are the most common options your doctor may discuss.

Oils and tinctures

Oils are taken by mouth, often under the tongue, using a measured dropper or syringe. They make it easy to adjust doses precisely and are one of the most commonly prescribed forms. Effects usually begin within 30–90 minutes and can last several hours.

Capsules and wafers

Capsules contain a fixed dose, which some people find more convenient and discreet. Like oils, they take longer to work because they pass through the digestive system.

Dried flower for vaporisation

Some patients are prescribed dried flower to be used with a medical-grade vaporiser, which heats the plant material without burning it. Effects start within minutes but don't last as long as oral forms.

Other forms

Sprays, lozenges and topical creams are also available in some cases.

Which is right for me?

That depends on your condition, how quickly you need relief, how long you need it to last, and your lifestyle. Your doctor will talk through the options with you.
